Garbage Collection Referendum
Posted Friday, February 16, 2024
Dear Unincorporated Bloomingdale Township Residents:
DuPage County officials have advised the township that they are considering having the County take over contracting for garbage collection services in unincorporated areas of the County, including those in Bloomingdale Township. This would be accomplished by passing a countywide ordinance, but not a vote by the residents.
After learning this, the Bloomingdale Township Board passed a resolution in November of 2023 to place a referendum question on the ballot at the March 19, 2024 primary election. The referendum question asks whether the Bloomingdale Township Board should be authorized to enter into a contract for the collection, disposal, composting and recycling of garbage and refuse for residents of the unincorporated areas of Bloomingdale Township.
The Bloomingdale Township Board takes no position on the question. The Township Board passed this resolution to place this referendum question on the ballot so that the residents of the unincorporated areas of Bloomingdale Township have a say in whether the Township Board should be permitted to contract for garbage collection services and to provide this option to the residents of the unincorporated areas of Bloomingdale Township, instead of possibly having DuPage County handle garbage. A copy of the ballot question is attached.
